SHADES OF RESISTANCE

Marylebone

August 2024

“It's an artist's duty to reflect the times in which we live.” - Nina Simone

The Bomb Factory Art Foundation is pleased to present Shades of Resistance, a group showcurated by NCProductions, at our Marylebone Gallery from 16th to 18th August. This exhibition features a variety of visual works alongside live performances, providing a platform for emerging London-based artists to offer their localised perspectives on modern history. Shades of Resistance examines the experiences and challenges faced by young people in our communities through the mediums of photography, painting, film, poetry and dance.

The show redefines resistance by focusing on the daily experiences of young artists. Inspired by events such as Pride, Notting Hill Carnival, Black Lives Matter, and the 2024 General Election, it explores how resistance has become integral to the lives of many young people in the UK over the past two decades. The works on display address issues of heritage, youth, queerness, and womanhood with both depth and nuance.

NCProductions, a multimedia production company, collaborates with artists across many disciplines, aiming to create social impact through art and support underrepresented voices. Co-founded by Isaac Bokoko, who previously participated in the Bomb Factory Free Artist Residency programme, NCProductions upholds the legacy established by the Bomb Factory by offering similar support and opportunities to emerging artists.

This project captures contemporary British society, inviting visitors to view modern Britain through the lens of its youth. It offers not just artworks but a reflection of a generation’s spirit and a glimpse into the UK’s evolving social and cultural landscape.
