BETWEEN DOG AND WOLF - Marcus Leotaud Solo Exhibition at The Bomb Factory Marylebone

The Bomb Factory Art Foundation is pleased to present Between Dog and Wolf, a compelling solo show by Marcus Leotaud, exploring twilight as a symbol of liminality.

Running from 28th March to 20th April at our Marylebone Gallery, the exhibition will showcase large-scale, immersive works that capture the essence and uncertainty of twilight. This liminal space between day and night, is what the French call entre chien et loup (between dog and wolf). Viewers may glimpse animals, lovers, fighters, heroes, and sinners emerging from the fading light. This is the hour when perceptions blur, and the distinction between the familiar and the unfamiliar, the real and the imagined, begin to dissolve and become mutable.

A sense of intimacy permeates the work. These dark, shimmering paintings are initially difficult to discern but gradually reveal themselves: a deliberate effect imposed by the artist, who states: "To approach is invariably to recede, to shut is to move away from and begin anew." In this way, twilight resists simple explanation, urging us to recognise that some experiences transcend the limits of language.

A strong thematic thread runs through the exhibition, rooted in the artist’s re-evaluation of Western religious representation and his exploration of spiritual intimacy and despair. Rather than attempting to define emotional reality, Leotaud’s paintings seek to uncover the paradoxes and contradictions inherent in our attempts to articulate it.

The exhibition highlights Leotaud’s existential anxiety, reflecting not only on environmental degradation and physical transformation but also on the psychological toll these crises take. The work resonates with themes of human fallibility, hope, and the search for redemption. His use of natural materials, gelatin glue, pigment, and linen, further underscores ideas of order, sustainability, and the cyclical nature of existence.

Ultimately, this solo show contemplates the fragile space between self and others, the physical and the spiritual, the individual and the universal; serving as a powerful reminder that some truths cannot be neatly defined - they must be felt, experienced, and lived in the liminal space between light and dark, between dog and wolf.

Artist

Marcus Leotaud explores themes of intimacy, perception, and narrative. His work examines how personal and historical stories take shape through material and process. His paintings exist in an ambiguous space, always on the verge of being fully seen. Having contributed to two of our most significant group exhibitions—One Nation Under a Groove and In Rapture—Leotaud’s solo show feels like a natural progression, reflecting both his growth as an artist and our ongoing commitment to supporting that journey.
