FERTILITY FORTUNES - The (Mis) Conceptions Project Exhibition at The Bomb Factory Holborn

To celebrate the (Mis)Conceptions Card Deck, and the launch of Conceiving Histories book written by Isabel Davis (lead researcher, a historian and curator for culture at the Natural History Museum) about trying to conceive in past and present, there will be a 4-day exhibition, Fertility Fortunes bringing together art by artist Anna Burel and a programme of creative and embodied workshops, talks, film and spoken word from leading specialists working in the women's and fertility health space.

The programme will feature historians, doctors, artists, writers and more sharing their experiences of fertility misconceptions. The exhibition will showcase larger-than-life sculptures, as well as drawings from the preparation of the card deck. Also represented is artist Sally Butcher's digital AR installation work.

Because of the limited number of spaces in the creative workshops at a given time we ask for people to register in advance (tickets are all free) to keep track of numbers. Some of the workshops/talks can be intimate and possibly triggering because of their content. We want to provide a safe space and you can always step out if you need or ask organisers for support. Further information about the research and tickets are available through their website:

Housed in the Natural History Museum London, the (Mis)Conceptions project is an AHRC-funded research project led by NHM researcher Isabel Davis, that explores the cultural history of fertility health and especially pregnancy ambiguity - the common experience of not knowing whether a pregnancy is established or viable. The (Mis)Conceptions project has hosted numerous focus groups and workshops. From these consultations they have developed a conversation card deck modeled on the modern Tarot, that can help people to explore and process experiences of pregnancy ambiguity. Their goal is to raise awareness for these important, ubiquitous but invisible issues, explore historic connections and the roots of our collective silences about (in)fertility, and, most importantly, help people who share these experiences feel less isolated and alone.
