FLOWERS ON THE UNDERGROUND - Tallulah Hutson at The Bomb Factory Archway

The Bomb Factory Art Foundation is pleased to present Flowers on the Underground, a solo exhibition by Tallulah Hutson at our Archway Gallery from September 26th to 19th October.

Hutson’s oil paintings explore and challenge traditional masculinity, urging viewers to reflect on the impact of these stereotypes. Through portraits of men paired with flowers, she explores how societal expectations shape men’s self-expression and emotional vulnerability. The exhibition carries a theme of isolation, with Hutson’s portraits examining the desire for connection and the emotional distance that often exists among her subjects.

The exhibition’s title is inspired by Hutson’s first piece in the series, Going Somewhere. This work stems from her observations of men’s varying levels of comfort when carrying flowers in public, their interactions with flowers becoming a lens into their relationship with masculinity and vulnerability.

Hutson’s subjects, drawn from her circle of friends and acquaintances, were painted at least partially from life. Each man chose his attire and flowers, revealing different levels of comfort during the process. Some reflected on unexpected moments of openness and self-awareness, creating a meta-narrative where the act of painting reinforced the themes of Hutson’s work.

Flowers on the Underground critiques masculine stereotypes while acknowledging the diversity of men’s experiences and self-expression. As activist and poet Alok Vaid-Menon writes in their book Beyond the Gender Binary, “There are as many ways to be a man as there are men.” This exhibition offers a thoughtful exploration of contemporary masculinity through art.
