Join us this Saturday 15 February, for the opening of I Would Rather Be Horizontal, a group exhibition featuring 23 London-based artists. The show includes sculptures, paintings, photographs, and multimedia installations. It opens at The Bomb Factory Art Foundation in Marylebone from 5–9 PM and runs until 22 February.
The title is drawn from Sylvia Plath’s poetry collection Crossing the Water, a book that navigates themes of death, dissatisfaction, loss, grief, and the power of memory. Plath’s imagery suggests a passage across water—symbolising the flow of time and the inevitability of mortality. The phrase “I Would Rather Be Horizontal” evokes a rejection of the vertical, the monumental, or the dominant, instead, embracing states of vulnerability, stillness, and dissolution.
The exhibition explores the tension between resilience and fragility, questioning how an artwork’s presence endures while its context, environment, and meaning remain in flux. Especially by bringing together works in this space, where traces of construction remain and interact with shifting materiality, I Would Rather Be Horizontal invites viewers to reconsider stability, memory, and the passage of time.
